Chinese Gender Chart

A traditional novelty predictor based on the mother's lunar age at conception. About 50% accurate, just for fun.

Used only to calculate lunar age. Nothing is stored.
The day the baby was conceived.
Short answer: The chart predicts baby sex from the mother's lunar age and the lunar month of conception. Peer-reviewed studies (Villamor 2010, 2.8 million Swedish births) show accuracy is essentially 50 percent, no better than a coin flip. Entertainment only. See the methodology for the formula and evidence.

How the chart works

The traditional chart is organized by the mother's lunar age at conception and the lunar month of conception. Lunar age adds roughly one year to your Western age, because Chinese tradition counts the year in the womb as age one.

The chart is often described online as having Qing-era or tomb-related origins, but those origin stories are difficult to verify. Studies that checked it against real birth outcomes put its accuracy at about 50%, i.e. no better than a coin flip. It's a fun tool, not a diagnostic.

Want a real answer?

An ultrasound after 18 weeks, or non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) from 10 weeks, can tell you the actual sex of your baby. After birth, see how your baby compares on our growth percentile chart.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the Chinese Gender Chart?

Peer-reviewed research has found the Chinese lunar calendar method performs no better than chance, roughly 50 percent accurate. Treat it as entertainment, not a diagnostic tool. Medical methods like anatomy ultrasound and non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) from a blood draw give reliable answers from the first or second trimester.

What is lunar age?

Lunar age, also called Chinese age, counts the time in the womb as year one. For most people this adds roughly one year to their Western age, though the exact value depends on the lunar New Year date in the year they were born. The calculator handles the conversion from your birth date for you.

When can I find out the actual sex of my baby?

A mid-pregnancy anatomy ultrasound, usually performed between 18 and 22 weeks, can reliably show the baby's sex. Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) from a blood draw can identify it as early as 10 weeks. Both methods are widely available and far more accurate than any folk chart or gender prediction tool.

Does the chart work for IVF pregnancies?

The chart uses the conception date, so IVF works the same way. The known fertilization date from the embryo transfer gives you a more exact conception month than in a natural cycle. That does not make the chart more accurate, the method itself still performs no better than a coin flip.

Where does the Chinese gender chart come from?

The chart is often described online as having Qing-era or tomb-related origins, but those origin stories are difficult to verify. The specific grid found online today has no verified historical source. Modern academic studies consistently find it does not predict sex at a rate better than chance.

Why do chart predictions vary by source?

Different versions use slightly different lunar-age conversions, age-at-conception calculations, and grid cells, so the same inputs can produce different predictions on different sites. None of the variants have been shown to outperform chance, so the inconsistency is not a bug, it is what you would expect from a chart with no predictive power.
